In the world of baseball, the designated hitter rule has largely erased the drama of pitchers helping themselves at the plate. But down in the minor leagues, the game still serves up moments of pure, unscripted magic. Just ask the Nashville Sounds.

On May 15, the Milwaukee Brewers' Triple-A affiliate found themselves in a tight 3-3 extra-inning battle against the Iowa Cubs. After burning through six pitchers—including a short start from Tate Kuehner—Nashville turned to an unlikely hero: infielder Ethan Murray.

Pressed into emergency pitching duty for the top of the 11th inning, the 26-year-old didn't exactly have an easy start. He walked former Brewers infielder and Wisconsin native Owen Miller, putting two runners on with nobody out. But Murray, who topped out near 80 mph but mostly relied on soft tosses in the 40s and 50s, showed remarkable composure. A lineout, a groundout, and a spectacular diving catch in center field by top prospect Luis Lara got the Sounds out of the jam unscathed.

Then came the real fireworks. With the game still tied in the bottom of the 11th, Cubs reliever Ryan Jensen—an actual pitcher—struck out Jeferson Quero and intentionally walked Eddys Leonard to bring Murray to the plate. The infielder, who had never pitched in his professional career before that night, delivered a walk-off single to secure both the win and his first victory on the mound.

Murray, a fifth-round pick out of Duke in the 2021 draft, has posted a .645 OPS this season with two home runs and 13 RBIs. But on this night, he was a two-way star in every sense of the word. Shortstop prospect Cooper Pratt also contributed with a home run and a double as the Sounds extended their winning streak to five games.

It's the kind of story that reminds us why we love baseball: one day you're an infielder just trying to get on base, the next you're a pitcher with a walk-off win to your name. And yes, you read that right.
