The Los Angeles Chargers entered the NFL Draft with a clear mission: give quarterback Justin Herbert all the support he needs to succeed. While they bolstered the offensive line with four picks, their fourth-round selection of wide receiver Brenen Thompson might just be the most crucial move of all.

Thompson, taken out of Mississippi State, brings something the Chargers' offense has been craving—blazing speed. At the NFL Combine, he clocked a jaw-dropping 4.26-second 40-yard dash, making him the fastest offensive player in Indianapolis. That kind of acceleration doesn't just turn heads; it changes how defenses play.

"A talented wide receiver corps gets a deep threat in Thompson," wrote ESPN insider Matt Miller. "That speed showed during his Mississippi State career, as he led the SEC in receiving yards last season. The Chargers have possession receivers in Ladd McConkey and Tre' Harris, and the hope is that Quentin Johnston will continue to develop in the final year of his rookie deal, but drafting Thompson gives them a true field-stretching talent who can loosen up coverages."

Standing at just 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, Thompson might not tower over defenders, but his production speaks volumes. In his lone season with the Bulldogs, he hauled in 57 catches for 1,054 yards and six touchdowns, proving he can be a go-to weapon downfield.

Thompson's path to the NFL wasn't a straight line. A top-100 recruit out of high school in 2022, he initially committed to Texas but struggled to find playing time in Austin. A transfer to Oklahoma offered little more. It wasn't until he landed at Mississippi State that he finally got the opportunity to showcase his talent—and he made the most of it.

While it may take time for Thompson to carve out a consistent role in the Chargers' offense, his speed alone will force opposing secondaries to respect the deep ball. That's exactly the kind of threat Herbert needs to keep defenses honest and open up space for the rest of the playmakers.

What do you think of the Chargers' latest addition? Is Thompson the missing piece for Herbert's aerial attack? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
