North Carolina basketball is synonymous with tradition and excellence, but even the Tar Heels aren't immune to the modern reality of roster turnover. This offseason, Chapel Hill has seen a dramatic exodus that leaves the program rebuilding nearly from scratch.
With a new head coach at the helm in Michael Malone, UNC is navigating a period of significant change. The Tar Heels have lost a staggering 86% of their total scoring from the 2025-26 season—that's 2,283 points walking out the door. The departures include two players headed to the NBA Draft, seven entering the transfer portal, and two graduating seniors.
The biggest blows come from the NBA-bound duo. Caleb Wilson, projected as a top-four pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, leaves after just one season in Carolina blue. Henri Veesaar, expected to be a late first-round or early second-round selection, is also moving on. Together, despite missing some games to injury, they accounted for 1,004 points—38% of the team's total offensive output.
The transfer portal has been equally unkind. Seven players departing via the portal combined for 940 points, representing 35% of last season's scoring. That's a massive hole in the lineup that new additions—both from the portal and an overseas signing—will need to fill.
As Coach Malone works to complete the 2026-27 roster, the challenge is clear: replace over 2,000 points worth of production while maintaining the standard that makes UNC basketball special. For fans, it's a season of uncertainty, but also one of opportunity as a new era takes shape in Chapel Hill.
