The Atlanta Braves have made a roster move, trading catcher Jonah Heim to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations—just hours after designating the veteran backstop for assignment.
Heim’s departure clears the way for Sean Murphy’s return from the injured list, leaving the Braves with a decision to make behind the plate. While the team briefly considered carrying three catchers—especially with top prospect Drake Baldwin and Murphy expected to handle the bulk of the workload—the injury-depleted outfield forced Atlanta’s hand.
Heim performed admirably in a backup role over the past month, slashing .231/.311/.410 with a 99 wRC+ across 45 plate appearances. His steady bat and veteran presence provided solid depth, but the Braves ultimately needed the roster flexibility.
Looking ahead, if either Baldwin or Murphy goes down with an injury, Atlanta will likely turn to Chadwick Tromp, who is currently honing his skills at Triple-A Gwinnett. For now, the Braves are banking on health and production from their new-look catching tandem.
