Braves Minor League Recap: FCL Season Opens

Saturday saw the teams in the Atlanta Braves system lose all six games played, but the FCL got the season underway.

Saturday was a tough day for the Atlanta Braves minor league system, as all six games ended in losses—including a Columbus doubleheader and the opening of Florida Complex League (FCL) action. While the results weren't what fans hoped for, there were still plenty of storylines worth following, from prospect debuts to rehab assignments and even some position players taking the mound.

In Triple-A, all eyes were on Owen Murphy, who made his much-anticipated debut with the Gwinnett Stripers. The young right-hander started strong, keeping the Charlotte Knights scoreless in the first inning, but ran into trouble in the second, surrendering four runs. He settled down to pitch scoreless third and fourth frames before allowing one more run in his final inning of work. Murphy finished with five runs allowed on six hits and three walks, striking out two and generating seven whiffs over 83 pitches. From there, the bullpen struggled—Javy Guerra gave up six runs in the fifth, and Tayler Scott allowed two more in just two-thirds of an inning. The game turned into a position-player pitching showcase, with Luke Williams and Brett Wisely each allowing four runs before Aaron Schunk tossed a scoreless third of an inning.

Offensively, Aaron Schunk led the way with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double and an RBI. Jose Azocar was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, while rehabbing catcher Sean Murphy (no relation to Owen) went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the Stripers' only run.

Over in Columbus, Game 1 of the doubleheader featured a bullpen game, with Samuel Strickland covering the first three innings and allowing three runs. Shay Schanaman followed with three innings, giving up two more runs, and LJ McDonough allowed three unearned runs in his inning of work. Despite the pitching struggles, the Clingstones were actually leading heading into the seventh and final inning before things fell apart.

The bright spot? Columbus showed some serious power at the plate. Jordan Groshans launched two home runs, while David McCabe and Archer Brookman each added solo shots of their own. McCabe has been on a tear, and his continued hot streak is something Braves fans should keep an eye on.

Even on a day when the win column stayed empty, there were glimpses of talent and resilience across the system—something to build on as the season rolls on.
