If postseason whiplash is a real thing, the Bradley women's golf team experienced it firsthand on April 22. The Braves had just come agonizingly close to capturing the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals—falling just one shot short of glory.
That gut-wrenching defeat made the long drive back to Peoria, Illinois, from TPC Deere Run feel even longer. But just when the disappointment was settling in, the pendulum swung dramatically. The next morning, head coach Halley Morell discovered an invitation to the National Golf Invitational waiting in her inbox.
"Emotions were all over the place," Morell said. "There was new excitement, but we were still reeling from the day before. It was definitely an emotional week."
For the Braves, this invitation represents a historic first—their debut appearance at the NGI—and their first team postseason competition in two decades. It was an opportunity they simply couldn't pass up, even if it meant rearranging some important plans. Seniors Caroline McConnell and Allison Pacocha will miss graduation ceremonies. Others have had to reschedule internships and commitments. But for a team that has poured so much into this season, this second chance at a fitting finale is worth every sacrifice.
If any Bradley team deserved to extend its season into May, it's this one. Beyond that heartbreaking conference finish, the Braves turned heads all year with five other top-5 finishes. The highlight came in February at the Rio Verde Invitational, where Bradley mounted a comeback victory over Xavier—a top-75 program—down the stretch.
"There's so much good that happened that can get overshadowed when conference doesn't go your way," Morell reflected. "The NGI is a great opportunity to finish the season on a better note and truly cap off what this season really was—a great season."
The National Golf Invitational runs May 15-17 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, roughly an hour from where the Braves' season began to take shape. Now, they have a chance to rewrite the ending.
