The tennis courts at Kirby Park are heating up as the District 2 singles championships head into an action-packed semifinal round. West Scranton's Matthew D'Augostine is making waves as the No. 5 seed, punching his ticket to the Class 3A semifinals after a gritty performance on Thursday.

D'Augostine's path to the final four wasn't easy. He opened with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Pittston Area's Artur Biksey, then showed real grit in a 6-2, 7-5 battle against Scranton's Tom Bergman, the No. 4 seed. Now he faces his toughest test yet: top-seeded Prayush Mallaiah of Abington Heights, who has been nearly untouchable this season. Mallaiah, along with teammate and No. 2 seed William Arp, have both cruised through the tournament without dropping a set, keeping their undefeated seasons alive. Arp will take on Wyoming Valley West's Gadgidas Reisinger, the No. 3 seed, in the other semifinal.

Over in Class 2A, the semifinals read like a championship preview. Last year's runner-up, top-seeded Billy Hall of Wyoming Seminary, will face Holy Cross' Ray Zhang, the No. 4 seed. In the other matchup, Holy Cross' Alex Harrison, the No. 2 seed, goes up against Wyoming Seminary's Dhru Sudhakar, the No. 6 seed. These four players know each other well—they led their teams to the District 2 Class 2A Team Championships final earlier this season.

Hall has been dominant, dispatching Dunmore's Keegan Oprisko and Dallas' Nate Linnen in straight sets. Sudhakar had a marathon day, winning three matches, including a statement victory over MMI Prep's Max Bleiler, the No. 3 seed. Zhang and Harrison have also been sharp, each dropping just one set on their way to the semis.

The semifinals kick off Friday at 1 p.m. at Kirby Park, with the championship finals to follow. With undefeated seasons, revenge matches, and breakout performances on the line, it's shaping up to be a day of high-stakes tennis you won't want to miss.
