The Willmar Cardinals boys golf team is teeing off the 2026 season with a powerful sense of optimism, and for good reason. Head coach Joe Kuehn welcomes back a deep and experienced roster, returning five of his six golfers from last year's Section 8AAA squad. With only one key senior, Anthony Cellini, lost to graduation, the foundation is solid for a potential breakout year.
That optimism was on display right out of the gate, as the Cardinals opened their spring campaign with a strong fourth-place finish at the Monticello Invitational. The performance underscored Coach Kuehn's confidence in his lineup. "We are about seven deep," Kuehn stated, setting an ambitious tone. "I want to surprise people."
Leading the charge are three junior captains who form a formidable core. Aden Jacobson, a state tournament entrant last season, and fellow All-Central Lakes Conference selection Luke Larson are poised to be consistent low scorers. "They should lead our team and help our team score stay down," Kuehn said of the duo, praising their work ethic and excitement for the season.
Completing the captain trio is Liam Ims, a player with undeniable talent who is seeking greater consistency after flashing brilliance with a couple of 70s last year. "We need to get him settled in because we need him," Kuehn emphasized, highlighting Ims's crucial role in the team's aspirations.
The Cardinals' depth extends well beyond their captains. Sophomore Evan Michelson is generating significant buzz, with Coach Kuehn predicting a "breakout year." Michelson, who hits his driver over 300 yards, benefits from high-level instruction, a family tradition of golf excellence that also aids Aden Jacobson. Senior Cooper Lownsbury is another player turning heads, showing newfound confidence and decision-making that could make him a stable varsity contributor. "He's got the length. He's got the game," Kuehn noted. "He's just got to put some complete rounds together."
With additional key pieces like senior Gibson Horyza and junior Sawyer Dahl—who led the team with a 75 at the opener—Willmar has the pieces to climb the Central Lakes Conference standings. Last year's fifth-place finish is squarely in their sights, though the challenge is steep in a conference featuring defending state Class AA champion Detroit Lakes and strong programs like Alexandria and Brainerd.
Armed with experience, depth, and a quiet confidence, the Willmar Cardinals are on the fairway aiming for a season that could indeed surprise a few people.
