The Greenville Drive stumbled out of the gate in Tuesday night's series opener, falling 5-1 to the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fluor Field. It was a tough start to what promises to be an exciting six-game homestand, as the Drive couldn't quite find their rhythm against a sharp Bowling Green squad.
From the very first inning, the Hot Rods set the tone. Émilien Pitre wasted no time making an impact, launching a solo homer in the opening frame to go along with three RBIs on the night. Starting pitcher Jack Kartsonas was equally impressive, dealing six strong innings that kept the Drive's bats at bay. With the win, Bowling Green improved to 23-11, while Greenville slipped to 13-20.
The Hot Rods struck early and often. Adrian Santana led off the game with a single, then promptly stole second and third base—a display of speed that had the crowd buzzing. Theo Gillen brought him home with a sacrifice fly, and just like that, it was 1-0. Two batters later, Pitre sent a 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for his first homer of the season, stretching the lead to 2-0.
Greenville had a golden opportunity to answer in the bottom of the first. Justin Gonzales drew a leadoff walk, and Isaiah Jackson followed with a double to left-center, putting two runners in scoring position with just one out. But Kartsonas bore down, striking out Jack Winnay and Mason White to escape the jam unscathed. It was a sign of things to come—the Drive kept creating chances but couldn't deliver the clutch hit.
The pattern continued throughout the night. Adonys Guzman was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch in the second, but Antonio Anderson grounded out. White singled in the fourth and advanced on a throwing error, but again the Drive came up empty. Meanwhile, Bowling Green kept adding on. In the fifth, Connor Hujsak singled, stole second, and scored on a J.D. Gonzalez single. Later in the inning, Pitre drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.
The Drive finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on base and the crowd hoping for a rally, they managed to push across a run to cut the deficit to 4-1. But the Hot Rods answered right back in the sixth, scoring once more to restore their four-run lead.
For fans at the ballpark, it was a night of near-misses and "what ifs." The Drive collected six hits and put multiple runners in scoring position throughout the game, but the timely hit never came. It's the kind of game that reminds you how thin the line is between a win and a loss in this sport—and why every piece of gear, from your batting gloves to your cleats, matters when you're chasing that perfect swing.
The series continues Wednesday night, and if the Drive can tighten up their approach with runners in scoring position, they have every chance to even things up. For now, it's back to the drawing board—and maybe a fresh pair of batting gloves for the next game.
