Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg describes Southampton's alleged spying on a training session as an attempt to cheat.

The Championship play-off semi-final between Middlesbrough and Southampton has taken a dramatic turn, with Boro boss Kim Hellberg accusing the Saints of attempting to cheat by allegedly spying on his team's training session. The controversy, now dubbed "spygate," has added a layer of intense animosity to the already high-stakes clash.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday at Middlesbrough's Rockliffe Park training ground, where a member of Southampton's staff is said to have filmed a closed practice session. The English Football League (EFL) has since charged Southampton with breaching two regulations, escalating the tension ahead of Saturday's goalless first leg.

Speaking after the match, Hellberg didn't hold back, describing the alleged spying as a clear attempt to gain an unfair edge. "I couldn't believe my eyes or ears when I heard it," he said. "It was quite clear that they tried [to spy]. There's someone who makes decisions to go and try to cheat. That's clear." The 38-year-old manager emphasized that this wasn't just a minor infraction, but a "massive advantage" if the session had been filmed, noting that training sessions reveal far more than match footage ever could.

Hellberg was careful to separate the actions of the club from its supporters, praising Southampton's fans as "brilliant" and "unbelievable." He added, "They have nothing to do with it, and I sometimes feel sorry for them because they get this thrown in their face." However, he called for a broader reaction across the Championship, stating, "I think every team in the Championship should be angry. It's wrong. Just wrong."

The play-off semi-final remains finely poised at 0-0, with the second leg set to decide who advances. As the football world watches closely, the focus now shifts to how Southampton will respond both on and off the pitch. For fans and players alike, this controversy serves as a reminder of the high stakes and fierce competition that define the Championship's quest for Premier League glory.
