When you think of college football icons, few are as instantly recognizable as Boise State's legendary blue turf. The "Smurf Turf" has become synonymous with the Broncos' brand, turning their home field into one of the most famous playing surfaces in sports history. Now, one superfan is taking that passion to a whole new level—by bringing a piece of it home.
This summer, Boise State is replacing its iconic blue field with a fresh, upgraded surface. But instead of simply discarding the old turf, the university turned it into a unique fundraising opportunity, offering fans the chance to own a literal piece of history. The move is a smart play in today's competitive college athletics landscape, where every dollar counts.
According to The Athletic, the auction has already scored a major win. One devoted fan shelled out a whopping $25,000 for a 400-square-foot section of the old turf. What's the plan for this massive blue carpet? A home improvement project that will surely be the envy of every tailgate party. Smaller sections also sold briskly at $4,000 and $2,000, proving that the demand for Bronco memorabilia is as strong as ever.
"How much the industry is changing, it's my job to continue to invest in our program, and to do that, I need resources," said Boise State athletic director Jeramiah Dickey. "You're going from a place of stretching dollars to how do you make more and how do you set up your infrastructure in your department to do so to take advantage of opportunities… This is low-hanging fruit. We know that every seven to nine years, we're going to have to change out the blue (turf). We know the blue has power."
From full field sections to smaller keepsakes, the university offered a range of options for fans eager to bring a bit of that blue magic into their lives. For the Broncos faithful, it's more than just turf—it's a symbol of the program's rise from underdog to national powerhouse. And for one lucky fan, it's the ultimate home field advantage.
