Bognor Cobras have begun competing in the sport's fourth tier after being promoted last season.

Bognor Cobras, a baseball club on England's south coast, is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity, drawing players from across the globe. The West Sussex-based team has just stepped up to compete in the sport's fourth tier following a promotion last season, marking a significant milestone for the fledgling club.

Head coach Chen-An Yu, who founded the Bognor Regis club after moving from Taiwan, has seen the team transform from a small group into a vibrant community hub. "We had three players in 2024, and now we are thriving," Yu says. Based at King George V Recreation Ground in Felpham, the Cobras now boast over 20 players regularly attending training sessions.

Yu's vision was simple: fill a gap in West Sussex's baseball scene. "There's a baseball club in Brighton, Guildford, Bournemouth, but not one in West Sussex, so we saw a chance," he explains. The club's philosophy prioritizes enjoyment over results. "We're not too worried about winning and losing—we just want to enjoy the game, and ultimately, the right outcomes will come."

The team's international flavor is one of its greatest strengths, with players hailing from four continents. For Antonio Narvaez, who moved from Nicaragua, the Cobras are more than just a team. "It's like a second family to me," he says. "I moved from Nicaragua in South America, where you are literally born with a baseball bat and glove in your hand. For us back home, it's the same as football is here."

Fabian Jesus, one of the younger members, shares a similar story. After leaving Venezuela with his family, he struggled to find a club—until now. "Baseball is in our blood," he says. "I just love it. Hopefully it becomes really popular; it is slowly getting there." Jesus admits that when he first started, his friends joked about the sport being like cricket or rounders, but the passion for baseball is undeniable.

With its growing roster and international spirit, the Bognor Cobras are proving that baseball's appeal knows no borders—and that a small club in West Sussex can make a big impact on the local community and beyond.
