The San Diego Padres closed out their homestand in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, snapping a four-game losing streak with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Petco Park.
While the early innings featured some thunderous power, it was a bit of late-game craftiness that sealed the win. Xander Bogaerts delivered the decisive blow in the eighth inning—not with a towering home run, but with a perfectly placed infield single. After Ramón Laureano drew a leadoff walk and stole second, and Jackson Merrill followed with a one-out single and a steal of his own, Bogaerts stepped to the plate. He fought off a pitch with a check-swing tapper that bounced past the mound and died in front of third base, allowing Laureano to race home with the go-ahead run.
Bogaerts finished the day 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI and also scored a run on a passed ball. The win marked San Diego's sixth victory this season when tied or trailing after the seventh inning—a testament to this team's never-say-die attitude.
The power show arrived in the fourth inning. Miguel Andujar led off by turning on an up-and-in sinker, sending it 407 feet to left-center for his second home run of the season. Two batters later, Manny Machado got a cutter in nearly the same spot and crushed it to left-center for his fifth homer of the year, giving the Padres the lead.
San Diego wasn't done there. Bogaerts and Ty France followed the home runs with back-to-back singles, and after Freddy Fermin drew a two-out walk, a wild pitch allowed Bogaerts to scamper home, making it 3-1.
On the mound, Griffin Canning made his first start for the Padres and looked sharp. The right-hander worked five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out seven. It was a solid debut for the new addition to the Brown and Gold, though he ultimately took a no-decision.
The win improves San Diego to 20-13 on the season, while the White Sox fall to 16-18. For Padres fans, it was the perfect way to close out a homestand—with timely hitting, solid pitching, and a clutch moment from a veteran star.
