Denver Broncos fans, there's good news on the horizon for quarterback Bo Nix. Head coach Sean Payton has revealed that there's a "good chance" the star signal-caller will be back on the field for the team's minicamp next month, marking a major milestone in his recovery from a broken right ankle.
Nix suffered the injury during Denver's thrilling divisional overtime win over the Buffalo Bills, and underwent surgery in January. However, a follow-up procedure about two weeks ago slowed his return, keeping him out of early offseason training activities. But according to Payton, this was all part of the plan.
"We feel real good about where he's at," Payton said after Saturday's rookie minicamp practice. "The follow-up procedure was not a surprise. We had five other players who staged surgeries this offseason, where there's a first step, then evaluate, and then a second step. He was the sixth to go through that. No surprises."
The timeline suggests Nix could be ready for the team's mandatory minicamp from June 16-18, before the summer break. From there, all signs point to him being "full speed by training camp" in late July. Payton emphasized the team will be cautious, saying, "We're going to be the ones kind of holding back, if you will."
Until Nix returns, backup Jarrett Stidham and No. 3 quarterback Sam Ehlinger will handle the snaps. The Broncos also have Nathan Peterman and tryout player E.J. Warner—son of Hall of Famer Kurt Warner—at rookie minicamp.
In other team news, Payton expressed excitement about general manager George Paton's five-year contract extension, which keeps him in Denver through 2030. "I consider myself very fortunate to have been with one general manager in New Orleans, and I feel the same way here," Payton said.
For now, Broncos fans can breathe easy—Bo Nix's recovery is right on track, and the franchise's future looks brighter than ever.
