The Denver Broncos' quarterback situation has taken another concerning turn, with Bo Nix's recovery timeline now extending into training camp following a second surgical procedure. What was initially expected to be a straightforward rehab process has become a growing source of unease for a franchise desperate for stability under center.
The latest development came Tuesday night when NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Dr. Norman Waldrop performed a follow-up cleanup procedure on Nix's ankle during a scheduled re-check. The Broncos organization plans to carefully manage the quarterback's offseason workload, but the team is still aiming for training camp as the target return date.
This news arrives alongside a pointed prediction from ESPN analyst Ben Solak, who painted a bleak picture of Denver's future during a recent appearance on The Ringer NFL Show. Solak suggested the Las Vegas Raiders could quietly surpass the Broncos in the AFC West hierarchy, adding a dismissive line that has Broncos Country buzzing: "The Chiefs start to fall apart. The Broncos, Bo Nix never comes back to health."
What makes Solak's take sting is the ammunition the front office has handed skeptics. Nix fractured his ankle late in overtime during an AFC Divisional Round victory against the Buffalo Bills after the 2025 campaign. But head coach Sean Payton's comments back in January hinted at deeper concerns, describing the injury as a pre-existing anatomical issue rather than a random play.
"What was found was a condition that was predisposed, they always find a little more when they go in," Payton said on January 26. "It wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when."
For Broncos fans, the combination of a second surgery and an analyst forecasting doom creates an unsettling picture. The team remains hopeful Nix will be ready for camp, but the road back is looking longer and more uncertain than anyone in Denver anticipated.
