Someone's job must be in jeopardy here.

The Cleveland Guardians just made a major splash behind the plate—and it’s leaving two of their catchers in a very awkward position.

On Saturday, the Guardians pulled off a trade for San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey, a two-time Gold Glove winner known for elite defensive skills. The deal, first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, sent the No. 29 pick in this year’s draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson to the Giants.

At first glance, adding a catcher of Bailey’s caliber sounds like a win. His defensive metrics are among the best in the game, and while his bat has cooled off recently, this move is clearly about upgrading the Guardians’ work behind the dish. But here’s where it gets confusing: Cleveland already had two capable catchers in Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges, plus a promising prospect in Cooper Ingle waiting at Triple-A.

So, what gives?

According to The Athletic’s Zack Meisel, Naylor has already been optioned to Triple-A. The 25-year-old hasn’t been hitting well this season, despite a strong finish to 2025 and a recent three-run homer that reminded everyone of his potential. His underlying metrics suggest he can turn things around, but for now, he’s the odd man out.

Hedges, meanwhile, remains a beloved clubhouse leader and has improved his swing this season while maintaining his usual solid defense. But with Bailey now in the mix and Ingle waiting in the wings, it’s hard to see where everyone fits.

The real head-scratcher? No one was really asking for a catcher upgrade in Cleveland. Yet the Guardians gave up a first-round pick and a solid prospect to bring in another backstop who, like their current options, isn’t exactly tearing the cover off the ball.

For Naylor, the message is clear: the shoe has already dropped. And with Ingle knocking on the door, the question isn’t just about who stays—it’s about who’s next to go.
