The diamond shone a little brighter Friday night as the Bedford North Lawrence Stars and Mitchell Bluejackets came together for a cause that transcends the scoreboard. In the 12th annual BNL Stars vs Cancer game, these two high school baseball teams didn't just compete — they united to make a real difference in their community.
With an ambitious goal of raising $6,000 for the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services (LCCPS), the teams and their supporters stepped up to the plate in a big way. When the final pitch was thrown, the total had soared to an impressive $7,000 — a thousand dollars above their target and a testament to the generosity of the local baseball community.
On the field, the action was just as compelling. The BNL Stars delivered a commanding performance, shutting out the Bluejackets 11-0 to improve their season record to 8-8. Mitchell, meanwhile, still stands strong at 8-7 overall and 4-1 in the Patoka Lake Athletic Conference — a mark that shows they're a force to be reckoned with in league play.
Both teams quickly turned their attention to the next challenge. Mitchell faced conference rival Perry Central on the road Monday, while BNL hosted Hoosier Hills Conference opponent New Albany in what promised to be another exciting matchup at home.
It's moments like these that remind us why we love baseball: it's not just about wins and losses, but about the community that forms around the game. And in this case, that community came together to swing for something far more important than a title.
