Every NFL dream starts with a single opportunity. For Xavier Loyd, that moment came in his hometown, and he made sure to leave an unforgettable impression.

The Kansas City native, who starred at Blue Springs High School, turned heads at the Chiefs' rookie minicamp over the weekend. His standout performance earned him a contract, making him one of three tryout players to secure a deal with the reigning AFC champions.

On paper, Loyd's college résumé might not jump off the page. He spent time at Kansas State (2022-2023) and Missouri (2025), recording just three catches for 37 yards combined. Standing at 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds, he entered the 2026 NFL Draft as a relative unknown — even draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked him 211th among wide receivers and misspelled his name as "Xaiver" in his draft guide.

But here's where the story gets interesting. In between those unproductive FBS stints, Loyd found his stride at Illinois State, an FCS program. During the 2024 season, he exploded for 66 receptions, 912 yards, and six touchdowns. One highlight-reel catch against Iowa even went viral, showcasing the kind of athleticism that caught Kansas City's eye.

Chiefs beat reporters, operating under strict confidentiality rules, have been tight-lipped about rookie camp details. But one consistent take has emerged: Loyd impressed. Team reporter Matt McMullen specifically noted him as one of the most notable tryout players after Saturday's session.

While Loyd may not have made the splash he wanted at the highest level of college football, he made the most of his second chance. Now, with a Chiefs contract in hand and a chip on his shoulder, this local product is ready to prove that sometimes, the best stories are the ones that don't follow the script.
