This potential trade will be tough to accomplish for the Blue Jays.

The Toronto Blue Jays may have stumbled out of the gate this season, but don't count them out just yet. Despite a rocky start, they remain firmly in the playoff conversation, sitting just 2.5 games back of an American League Wild Card spot. With the AL looking wide open, a midseason surge could be all it takes to flip the script.

To truly ignite their offense, the Blue Jays have been linked to a blockbuster trade target: San Francisco Giants slugger Rafael Devers. The 240-home run lefty masher would be a dream addition for any contender, but according to Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer, this particular deal comes with some serious roadblocks.

"The Blue Jays are another ostensible World Series contender that has been weirdly ineffective on offense," Rymer notes. "Like the Phillies, though, they're set at first base (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) and DH (George Springer)."

And there's the rub. While Devers—armed with a $313.5 million contract and a reputation as one of the game's premier power hitters—would undoubtedly upgrade Toronto's lineup, finding him a spot on the diamond is no easy task. Here are the two big reasons this trade is a tough sell.

1. First base is already taken. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. may be struggling at the plate this season, but he's still entrenched at first base. Devers, a career third baseman, can't slide into that role without bumping Vlad Jr. out of position—and that's not happening anytime soon.

2. The DH spot is locked down. George Springer has the designated hitter role on lock for at least the 2026 season. While Devers could be a long-term fit once Springer moves on, the short-term picture doesn't offer a clean landing spot for the Giants' star.

Toronto's need for offensive firepower is real, but adding a player of Devers' caliber requires a roster fit that just isn't there right now. For Blue Jays fans hoping for a midseason splash, this rumor might be more of a tease than a game-changer.
