It took Kazuma Okamoto a little while to find his rhythm in Toronto, but now that he has, the Blue Jays' Japanese import is making a massive impact. Already leading the team in RBIs, Okamoto is proving to be exactly what Toronto needed when they signed him to a four-year, $60 million contract to step into Bo Bichette's spot in the lineup.
Okamoto recently shared his mindset with Toronto media: "Every time there's a runner in scoring position, whenever I'm in that box, I definitely want to drive in that runner." And he's backing up those words with action—his team-leading 26th RBI is just the latest example of his clutch performance.
There was plenty of buzz about Okamoto's bat when he made the jump from Japan's NPB to MLB. Compared to fellow slugger Munetaka Murakami (now with the White Sox), Okamoto was seen as the more complete hitter. He showed that right away in Spring Training, spraying the ball to all fields with ease. While adjusting to MLB pitching is never easy, Okamoto's swing has allowed him to adapt quickly.
Now, he's in the zone. Whether it's crushing long home runs or peppering line drives across the diamond, Okamoto is becoming a cornerstone of Toronto's offense. For Blue Jays fans, this signing is looking like a home run in more ways than one.
