Rick Bowness said some of the Columbus Blue Jackets' players are so lucky there's no practice tomorrow after a 2-1 loss to end the season.

The Columbus Blue Jackets' season ended not with a bang, but with a furious roar from behind the bench. After a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in the season finale, head coach Rick Bowness delivered a blistering assessment of his team's heart and effort, making it clear that a culture change is non-negotiable.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention before the final puck drop, Bowness expected a competitive fire. What he saw instead was a team he felt had checked out. "All you got to do is look at the stat sheet," Bowness told reporters. "Three hits, 23 giveaways. I don’t know if I’m back, but if I’m back, I’m changing this culture."

The frustration stems from a dramatic late-season collapse. Hired in mid-January, Bowness engineered an incredible turnaround, posting a 21-11-5 record that made Columbus the eighth-best team in the NHL during his tenure and thrust them into the playoff conversation. However, the final stretch told a different story.

Over the last 11 games, the Blue Jackets stumbled to a 2-8-1 record, the second-worst in the league, effectively snuffing out their postseason hopes. This late fade confirmed Bowness's growing concerns about the team's mentality. "These guys, they don’t care," he stated bluntly. "Losing is not important to them... This is why we’re out of the playoffs. Losing, you have to hate losing, I don’t care if it’s a meaningless game."

His post-game comments echoed sentiments from late March, when he labeled his players "selfish" following another loss. For a franchise now missing the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season, Bowness's message is a stark one: talent alone isn't enough. Building a winning team requires a foundational shift in attitude, accountability, and a genuine hatred for defeat. The offseason in Columbus just got a lot more interesting.
