In a thrilling District 6 Class 1A playoff opener, Bishop McCort Catholic delivered a masterclass in pitching and defense, blanking Bishop Guilfoyle Academy 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Roxbury Park. The game was a pitcher's duel early on, with sophomore sensation Lariah Myers and Bishop Guilfoyle's Leah Byrne trading zeros on the scoreboard.

Myers was simply dominant from the start, retiring the first 10 batters she faced in order. The Crimson Crushers' offense finally broke through in the second inning, thanks to their bottom third of the lineup plating the game's first run. A two-run third inning gave Myers even more breathing room, and with error-free defense behind her, she never looked back.

"She did well with the changing of pitches, just keeps them off-balance," said Bishop McCort coach Jimmy Myers, who also happens to be Lariah's father. "That's one thing she's really strong at."

Myers fired a three-hit shutout, racking up 13 strikeouts while throwing an efficient 73 of her 89 pitches for strikes. She delivered first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 24 batters she faced, and induced 32 swings and misses using her full arsenal—curveball, changeup, and rise ball all working in perfect harmony.

"It was very important to start the playoffs with a win," said Myers. "It's been a long journey with this team. We're getting better as we go. I just love having my team behind me."

Myers struck out the side in both the fifth and seventh innings, and fanned two batters each in the first, second, and third frames. Her curveball and changeup were especially effective, keeping Bishop Guilfoyle hitters off balance all afternoon.

At the plate, sophomore shortstop Hannah Pfeil served as a catalyst atop the lineup, delivering two hits and scoring two runs. "We're really excited," said Pfeil. "I think we're going to prepare pretty well for them. We owe them from last year."

No. 6 seed Bishop McCort (10-11) now advances to face third-seeded Purchase Line (15-3) in Monday's district quarterfinal—a rematch of last year's playoff meeting, which Purchase Line won 7-4. The Crimson Crushers are hungry for redemption.

For No. 11 seed Bishop Guilfoyle (5-13), the loss marked their first postseason appearance since 2012. Senior pitcher Leah Byrne fought hard, recording five strikeouts and stranding seven runners to keep her team within striking distance. Brooke Swasing led the Marauders with two hits and was the only player to reach second base.

"We went up against a great team, a great pitcher and a lot of great hitters," said Bishop Guilfoyle coach Brian Byrne. "For us to go the distance and go down 4-0, I'm very proud of these girls. They played their hearts out out there today, and that's all I've ever asked from them all year."

With back-to-back shutouts under their belts, the Crimson Crushers are peaking at the perfect time. Their defense is clicking, their ace is dealing, and they have revenge on their minds as they prepare for Monday's showdown.
