Birdies flew at Astoria Golf and Country Club on Monday afternoon. Elsewhere, local baseball and softball teams continued their quests for league titles.
After shooting a record score of 67 at Gearhart Golf Links a year ago, the senior outdid himself on Monday during his demolition play at the Astoria Golf and Country Club.
Quang shot a bogey-free 66, to win the Seaside Invitational by nine strokes.
The six-under-par round became the new standard for Seaside High School and Quang. This round also beat the one shot by Damian Telles back in 2009. Telles, who played professional golf for a few seasons, had seen his tournament record stand for 17 years before it got beaten by Seaside’s senior star on Monday.
In addition to Quang, the Seaside boys saw stellar performances across the board. The Seagulls shot a season low 317 to finish second behind Camas High School of Washington. Camas put on a clinic as they shot a 304 to hoist the first place trophy. Camas had all five of their players score in the 70s, with the highest score being a 78.
The Seaside boys finished second, Banks came home third, Grant was fourth and Cowapa League teams St. Helens, Tillamook, Astoria and Scappoose finished fifth, ninth, 11th and 13th, respectively. Astoria shot a very solid score of 363.
Freshman Will Haag had a career best day for Seaside as he shot a 77. Haag made the turn at one over par, but faltered a little the last nine holes. Despite a few bad holes on the back nine, Haag still finished in a tie for fifth place with four other golfers. One of the players that Haag tied with was Warrenton sophomore Gavin Brown. Brown represented the Warriors solo and came home with a 77.
Seagulls junior Dexter Jenks shot another personal best with an 85, Gunner Norman shot an 89 and Tobin Santos carded a 94 as the Seagulls fifth player. Senior Landon Nofield played as an individual and scored a 90.
Astoria once again showed off their balanced scoring approach as they had all four scoring players within five strokes of one another.
Ty Cereghino led the way with an 89, Sawyer Rochon and Dominic Rico shot a 90 and Benjamin Murdock added a 94 as the fourth scorer. Kevin Dunn was the non scorer after shooting a 100.
“Xanh had a phenomenal round today,” Seaside head coach Jim Poetsch said in a statement. “As a team we were really good today, too. … The 317 is an excellent score, but I still don’t think we’ve played our best golf of the season yet.”
Astoria is set for a week off before they take on Seaside in the final Cowapa League match before postseason play. The Clatsop Clash golf edition is slated for Monday, May 4 and tees off at noon.
The Warrenton boys baseball team stayed firmly in the league title race with a 6-3 bounce back victory over Western Christian on Monday. The win improved their record to 6-2 in Coastal Range League play and kept them ranked No. 16 in 3A.
Aaron Neahring and Dylan Ballard were strong on the mound as they combined to strike out 13 batters and allow just six base runners. Neahring went the first five and struck out nine hitters, while giving up zero earned runs and Ballard struck out four batters in his two innings of work.
At the plate, Neahring and Finley Marshall led the way with two hits apiece. Other Warriors in the hit column were Zephan Pierce, Ryan Palmer, Thomas DeJesus and Eli Neahring. Palmer led the team with two runs batted in.
Seaside boys baseball have not been able to build off their win against Astoria.
The Seagulls have now lost three in a row after falling to Tillamook 4-0, and Scappoose twice by scores of 14-0 and 6-1.
After the losses Seaside now sit at 4-12 with a 1-4 league record. With Scappoose and Tillamook a step above the competition this year, St. Helens, Astoria and Seaside are left battling for position.
Seaside is set to take a break from league play with three non-league games. The Seagulls travel to Madras for a two-game series next Monday.
The Clatskanie boys baseball team put together a great performance on Tuesday to defeat Knappa 13-0 in five innings.
