The Binghamton Black Bears are on the hunt for their third straight Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) championship, and now they have home ice advantage to help make it happen. After splitting the first two games on the road, the Bears return to Visions Veterans Memorial Arena for a crucial three-game homestand starting Friday, May 8, with potential action through Sunday, May 10.
"The fact that we have three games in Binghamton, it's effectively a best-of-three series now, and we just have to win two home games to win our third straight title," a member of the Black Bears' media staff shared. "And when you have the fans cheering for you rather than cheering against you, it goes a long way."
The series is currently tied 1-1, but the momentum feels like it's swinging in favor of the Pee Dee IceCats, who have been lighting up the scoreboard with a 4.1 goals-per-game average in the playoffs. In contrast, the Black Bears are averaging 2.6 goals per game. However, the final scores don't tell the whole story. In Game 1, the IceCats took a 5-2 win at the Florence Civic Center, but the Bears bounced back in Game 2 with a dominant first period, grinding out a 2-1 victory on the road.
The real battle has been between the Bears' relentless offense and the IceCats' brick wall in net. In Game 1, Binghamton fired an impressive 44 shots on goal—nearly double the IceCats' total—and in Game 2, they overwhelmed the opposition with a 22-3 shot advantage in the first period alone. But Pee Dee goalie Breandan Colgan has been standing on his head, posting 82 saves over the last two games to keep his team in the series.
Leading the charge for the Black Bears is FPHL Forward of the Year Ivan Bondarenko, whose offensive firepower has been a constant threat. On the other end, rookie goalie Dominik Tmej, named the FPHL Goalie of the Year, has been sharp between the pipes, giving Binghamton a fighting chance. With a strict defensive zone and the ability to capitalize on power plays, the Bears are poised to turn the tide—especially with the roar of their home crowd behind them.
Now, it all comes down to two home wins. For the Black Bears, the path to a third straight title runs through Binghamton, and they're ready to make the most of it.
