In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, they greenlit the ambitious "Berlin+" concept, a plan that could see the German capital hosting the Summer Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. Mayor Kai Wegner and Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger unveiled the proposal, which boasts a compelling statistic: 97% of the required sports venues are already standing. For a city with a rich sporting history, this could be a game-changer.
The financials are equally eye-catching. Spranger estimated the organizing costs at €4.82 billion ($5.64 billion), but with projected revenues of €5.24 billion, the Games could turn a tidy profit of around €420 million. That surplus, Spranger emphasized, would be funneled straight into "Berlin's schools and grassroots sports," a move that could energize local communities and future athletes alike.
"We are convinced that hosting the Games in Berlin would be a win far beyond the realm of sports," Wegner declared at a news conference. "The Olympic and Paralympic Games can provide a major boost to our city and showcase Germany as a modern and reliable host." It's a vision that ties athletic excellence to urban renewal and global prestige.
Central to the plan is the "Olympic route," a symbolic corridor stretching from the historic Olympic Stadium in the west to Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport turned sprawling park in the south. This green space would host the opening ceremony, blending nature with spectacle. "The Olympic route will serve as a visible symbol of the connection between sports, culture, and urban society," explained Moritz van Dülmen, the city's managing director for culture projects.
Berlin isn't going it alone in this race. It's one of four candidates in Germany's domestic preliminary selection process, competing against Munich, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region centered on Cologne. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will make its decision on September 26, choosing which city to propose to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Interestingly, Berlin stands apart from its rivals in one key way: it won't hold a public referendum on the bid. While other cities may let voters decide, Berlin's leadership is pushing ahead with confidence, betting that the city's existing infrastructure and financial promise will win the day.
