In a thrilling battle between the top two teams in the MLS standings, Sebastian Berhalter delivered a clutch 76th-minute equalizer for the Vancouver Whitecaps, securing a 1-1 draw against the league-leading San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
The Earthquakes (9-1-2) remain atop the league with 29 points, just three ahead of second-place Vancouver (8-1-2). Goalkeeper Daniel De Sousa Britto—known simply as "Daniel"—was a standout for San Jose, making back-to-back saves in the 57th minute and finishing with four stops on the night.
The Whitecaps extended their unbeaten streak to six games, with four wins in that stretch. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka contributed two saves to keep Vancouver in the match.
San Jose struck early, with Preston Judd scoring in the fourth minute—his fourth consecutive game finding the back of the net—to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead. The goal continued Judd's hot streak and put the home team in control.
But Vancouver refused to back down. In the 76th minute, Berhalter pounced on a loose ball in the area, flicking a first-touch shot with the outside of his foot to level the score. The goal was part of an impressive run for Berhalter, who now has eight goal contributions (three goals, five assists) in his last seven starts.
The Earthquakes entered the match after a 1-1 draw with Toronto, which snapped their six-game winning streak. Before kickoff, the 1994 U.S. men's World Cup team was honored, adding a nostalgic touch to the evening.
