Brazil's national team goalkeeping coach, Cláudio Taffarel, has addressed the recent high-profile mistake made by Al-Nassr goalkeeper Bento, offering insight into the mental resilience required for the position. In a conversation with ESPN this Wednesday (13), the legendary 1994 World Cup winner confirmed he had already spoken with the player about the incident.
"It was a mistake, yes. I spoke with him, but he has already moved on," Taffarel explained, drawing on his own experience as Brazil's starting goalkeeper in the 1998 World Cup. "That's how a goalkeeper has to be. That's what always took me to the national team: I made mistakes, admitted them, and knew where and why I had gone wrong... And then I turned the page. That's part of the position, they have to be prepared."
The error occurred in the dying seconds of Tuesday's (12) Saudi derby against Al-Hilal, when Bento came off his line to clear a throw-in, collided with a teammate, and inadvertently scored an own goal. The costly mistake prevented Al-Nassr from clinching the Saudi league title early, adding extra weight to an already tense moment.
Despite the high-stakes blunder, Taffarel was quick to downplay any long-term consequences for Bento's national team prospects, especially with the World Cup on the horizon. "If a mistake weighed that much, I don't think I would ever have gone to a World Cup," he stated firmly. "He has been having a good season there, with consistency, and we are following him closely."
Bento remains among the pre-called goalkeepers for Brazil's upcoming squad, which will be announced by Carlo Ancelotti next Monday (18). He is joined by Alisson (Liverpool), Ederson (Fenerbahçe), Hugo Souza (Corinthians), John (Nottingham Forest), and Weverton (Grêmio) in the preliminary selection. For now, the message from the coaching staff is clear: one mistake won't define a career, and the focus remains on the bigger picture.
