Benson Henderson is proving that age is just a number. At 42 years old, the former UFC and Bellator standout is set to make his PFL debut next week in Belgium, and he's ready to remind the MMA world why he was once considered one of the best lightweights on the planet.
It's been over three years since Henderson last stepped into the cage—a submission loss to Usman Nurmagomedov in a Bellator lightweight title fight back in 2023. For many fighters, that kind of layoff would signal the end of the road. But for "Smooth," the competitive fire still burns bright.
"I want to because I enjoy it. I love competition," Henderson told MMA Junkie Radio. "What originally got me into wrestling, basketball, all of it was just my love of competing. Even at 42, I still love to get after it."
That passion has kept Henderson active, just not in the cage. Since his Bellator days, he's competed in boxing, karate, grappling, and wrestling matches under banners like Misfits Boxing and Karate Combat. The results haven't been kind—a 1-5 record outside MMA—but Henderson sees those setbacks as fuel, not a reason to hang up the gloves.
Enter PFL matchmaker Mike Kogan, a longtime friend who knew exactly which buttons to push. "He was getting at me a little bit," Henderson recalled. "He said, 'All these guys talking online, they forgot how good you are. Do you want to remind them?' I was like, 'I see what you're doing. Yeah, let's remind them what I bring to the table.'"
With a career record of 30-12, Henderson has nothing left to prove to anyone but himself. Yet here he is, stepping into the PFL cage at an age when most fighters are enjoying retirement. For fans of the sport, it's a chance to see a legend write one more chapter. For Henderson, it's simply about doing what he loves—competing.
Whether he walks away with his hand raised or not, one thing is certain: Benson Henderson still has the heart of a champion. And that's something no amount of time away can ever take away.
