The small chance of a DJ Reader return to the Bengals is over.

The Cincinnati Bengals' hopes of a DJ Reader reunion have officially come to an end, as the veteran defensive tackle is heading to the New York Giants. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Reader has signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Giants, putting to rest any lingering speculation about a return to the Queen City.

This move was widely anticipated after the Bengals traded the 10th overall pick to the Giants in exchange for star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. With Lawrence now anchoring the defensive line, the Bengals' depth chart has become too crowded for a Reader comeback. The team already boasts a formidable rotation, including BJ Hill, TJ Slaton, and free-agent signing Jonathan Allen. Plus, they're eager to see development from Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson.

While the thought of Reader reuniting with the Bengals was an exciting one for fans, the Lawrence trade reshuffled the deck. At 31, Reader still has plenty to offer, and New York is getting a reliable run-stopper who knows the AFC North well from his time in Cincinnati. For Bengals fans, it's a bittersweet farewell to a player who was a key part of their defensive resurgence.

As the offseason continues, the Bengals are clearly focused on building a dominant front line, and sometimes tough decisions have to be made. But for now, the Reader chapter in Cincinnati is officially closed.
