Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco, a veteran entering his 19th NFL season, has voiced strong opposition to the league's potential shift to an 18-game regular season schedule. In an interview with Front Office Sports, the Super Bowl XLVII MVP questioned where the expansion would end, drawing a line for player safety and competitive integrity.

"What happens when we go to 18? Are they gonna want 20? Are they gonna want 22?" Flacco said. "We used to play 14 games before I was even born. At some point it has to stop."

Flacco's primary concern centers on the physical toll an extended season would take, arguing it could ultimately diminish the quality of the sport's most critical games. "I don't think people realize that when you have to put guys through an 18-game regular season schedule... the playoffs start to suffer," he explained. "You get teams that are so beat up by that point in the year that they're not really at their best."

Despite the league's apparent momentum toward an 18-game season in the next collective bargaining agreement, Flacco acknowledged the professional reality for players. "If we're asked to play 18 games, I think you're not gonna see much difference," he stated. "We're just gonna have to do it and that is what it is."

The 41-year-old quarterback, who re-signed with the Bengals on a one-year deal last month after a productive six-start stint in 2025, brings a seasoned perspective to the debate, highlighting the balance between business growth and the preservation of the game and its players.
