The Cincinnati Bengals enter the new season with a glaring question mark at linebacker—a position that has yet to see meaningful reinforcement this offseason. Last year, the starting duo of Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr. left much to be desired, and the team notably avoided drafting a linebacker or signing a starting-caliber free agent. However, a potential diamond in the rough has emerged from the undrafted free agent pool: Eric Gentry, a former USC standout who has caught the attention of analysts and fans alike.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-6 and 221 pounds with 35-inch arms, Gentry is a rare athletic specimen. The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner recently highlighted him as a UDFA to watch, describing him as "an extremely long off-ball linebacker with outstanding agility." Baumgardner noted that Gentry is an old-school tweener—too light to play edge rusher but too athletic to keep off the field. "I was surprised he went undrafted, even if he is a project," he added.

For the Bengals, signing Gentry is a low-risk, high-reward move. His combination of size, speed, and agility is almost unheard of at the position, and even a modest bulking-up could make him a viable backup. At USC, Gentry flashed impressive instincts and coverage skills, but his game isn't without flaws. He can get overpowered at the point of attack and struggled with 15 missed tackles last season—a red flag that will need coaching.

Still, the potential is undeniable. If developed properly, Gentry could become a contributor on special teams early in his career, using his length and athleticism to disrupt plays. With defensive coordinator Al Golden known for molding raw talent, the Bengals might have found a project worth investing in. Keep an eye on this name—he could be a surprise breakout down the road.
