The Cincinnati Bengals announced their trade of the 10th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the New York Giants for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.
When did the Bengals and Giants start trade talks involving Lawrence and the first-round pick?
SNYtv reporter Connor Hughes reports via Twitter/X that the Bengals first engaged the Giants about a Lawrence trade by offering the No. 10 pick about two weeks ago.
"The Giants still wanted to try to figure out a way to keep Lawrence," Hughes added. "When it became clear that wasn't possible, they send Lawrence to Cincinnati."
Lawrence reportedly requested a trade April 6. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported April 7 that Giants head coach John Harbaugh responded to Lawrence's trade request by saying, "I'm not surprised by it. We'll try to work through it."
On the morning of April 7, Bengals defensive tackle BJ Hill, Lawrence's Giants teammate for two seasons, tweeted a shushing face emoji, leaving fans on social media speculating about a trade that would reunite Hill and Lawrence in Cincinnati.
About two hours before the Lawrence trade was announced April 18, Hill tweeted a smiling face with horns.
The Bengals announced a one-year contract extension for Lawrence through the 2028 season. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the one-year extension is worth $28 million, meaning Lawrence will earn $70M over three seasons.
