Arsenal have confirmed that Ben White's season is officially over after the defender suffered a significant knee injury during Saturday's clash against West Ham United.

The 26-year-old right-back, a key figure in Mikel Arteta's backline, sustained the damage to his medial collateral ligament (MCL) during a challenge in the second half. The club released a statement on Monday confirming that specialist assessments revealed the injury will require an extended recovery period, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

"Further to Sunday's match at West Ham United, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that Ben White has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of this season," the club wrote. "Our medical team are now managing Ben's recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations."

MCL injuries are among the most common in football, occurring roughly twice as often as ACL injuries. Around 75% of MCL injuries in professional football happen through contact with another player, which aligns with White's case—he was injured while challenging for a ball against a West Ham opponent.

These injuries are graded from 1 to 4 based on severity. Grade 1 involves minor stretching with microscopic tears and typically requires 1-3 weeks of recovery, while Grade 4—a complete rupture—demands surgery and a 10-12 week layoff. The average recovery time for MCL injuries is 24 days, though Grade 1 cases often sideline players for just 10 days. Given the club's announcement that White will miss the rest of the season, his injury appears to be on the more serious end of the spectrum.

For Arsenal fans, this is a tough blow as the team pushes through the final stretch of the season. White's versatility and defensive reliability have been crucial, and his absence will be felt. But the focus now shifts to his rehabilitation, with the hope that he'll be fully fit for pre-season training this summer. In the meantime, Arteta will have to reshuffle his defensive options to cover for the loss of one of his most consistent performers.
