Basketball is about more than just the final score; it's about community, teamwork, and the pure joy of the game. That spirit was on full display this week as Ben Reifel Middle School made local history, becoming the first middle school in Sioux Falls to host a Unified basketball game.

The home team Bison welcomed the Washington Warriors Best Buddies for an inaugural matchup that was every bit as competitive as it was inspirational. Unified sports programs are designed to break down barriers, creating opportunities for students with and without disabilities to train and compete together as teammates.

The impact of this program extends far beyond the court. "The best thing is when they see each other now in the hallways, there’s not that divide," said special education teacher Desiree Burggraaf. "They know each others names, they’re giving each other high fives, fist bumps, shouting at each other." This sense of unity and mutual respect is the true victory.

Of course, a little friendly competition never hurts! In a thrilling back-and-forth contest, the Ben Reifel Bison secured a narrow 23-22 victory over the Washington Warriors. It was a perfect ending to a landmark event that celebrated inclusion, sportsmanship, and the power of sport to bring people together.
