The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for what promises to be one of the most intense quarterback battles of the offseason, and former NFL linebacker Ben Leber is the latest to weigh in on the drama. As training camp approaches in Eagan, the competition under center has become the undeniable centerpiece of the team's offseason narrative.
The Vikings made it clear they wanted competition at every position, but the quarterback room has stolen the spotlight. With J.J. McCarthy and newly signed Kyler Murray set to clash, the stakes couldn't be higher. Leber, speaking on KFAN this week, didn't mince words: "I don't think you can really go wrong either way. There's going to be some shock and awe from people who can't believe it if McCarthy wins the job. Some will think there's politics behind it, but I honestly believe it's all business."
Leber emphasized that the decision will be purely performance-based. "I don't think they're trying to placate anyone or make a political decision. They simply want to create as much competition as possible at every position, and quarterback is no exception."
The Vikings signed Murray in March to a one-year, $1.3 million deal after the Arizona Cardinals released him. For Murray, this is a chance to prove he can still lead an offense. For McCarthy, the 2024 first-round pick, it's an opportunity to seize the reins after a developmental rookie season. Leber framed the battle as a win-win: "May the best man win. There's too much riding on the season; there's too much talent on this team."
Leber also pushed back against any notion that this is a rebuilding year. "This is not a rebuilding year where you say, 'Oh, we're just going to get cute, win a few games and be competitive.' There's no reason why we can't compete to win this division. None at all. This is not just a wasted year. This is a year where, 'Let's go for it.'"
Drawing a parallel to recent NFL history, Leber compared Murray's situation to Daniel Jones' stint with the Colts in 2025. "It could very well be a Daniel Jones situation where he walked into the Colts, and they said, 'Hey, we can't guarantee anything, but we'll give you a one-year rental deal, and all you have to do is get into a competition with Anthony Richardson.' Then Daniel Jones was like, 'Yeah, I see the writing on the wall here. I know that I can beat this guy out.'"
Leber added that Murray and his agent are fully aware of the challenge. "Kyler and his agent are not blind. They saw what happened with J.J. McCarthy last year, and they know the Vikings are serious about this competition."
For fans and gear enthusiasts alike, this quarterback showdown is shaping up to be a must-watch. Whether you're backing the veteran or the rookie, one thing is clear: the Vikings are all-in on winning now.
