Brandon Nimmo knows what it’s like to struggle in Queens.
On Monday, Greg Joyce of The New York Post published a conversation he had with the former Met. Nimmo had a message for anyone panicked over the Mets’ 9-19 start.
“I was part of that team that started off (0-5 in 2024), and then from May 15 on was the best team in baseball. So I’ve been on both sides of it,” Nimmo said, via The New York Post. “I wouldn’t say I’m surprised. Baseball, it takes a long time to have a good or bad season. So there’s still plenty of time for them to right the ship. And there’s still plenty of time for teams that are hot to go bad.
“So I wouldn’t say I’m surprised anymore. I’ve seen baseball go a lot of different ways. So now it’s just like, ‘Well, yep, that’s baseball.’ Baseball’s a crazy game.”
The 2024 Mets stumbled to a 0-5 start, and by May 29, they sat 11 games under .500 at 22-33. And then the June 12 first pitch by Grimace and the calling up of veteran infielder Jose Iglesias happened.
Behind an MVP-caliber season from Francisco Lindor and strong seasons from Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso, the “OMG Mets” surged to a 89-73 finish, clinching a postseason berth in Game 161 against the Atlanta Braves.
In the playoffs, they stunned the Brewers in the Wild Card Series with Alonso’s iconic three-run home run in the ninth, then beat the rival Phillies in the NLDS behind Lindor’s historic grand slam.
Their magical run eventually ended in the NLCS against the Dodgers.
