Belal Muhammad is making it clear: he’s not ready to forgive Sean Strickland for his repeated Islamophobic remarks—even after Strickland issued a public apology.

Strickland (31-7) has a history of making offensive comments about Islam, and his latest target was Khamzat Chimaev (15-1) ahead of their UFC 328 clash last weekend. After dethroning Chimaev via split decision, Strickland apologized to him and also addressed fans of various religions. But for Muhammad, a devout Muslim, the apology rings hollow.

“Even though the clown apologized, ‘I apologized to my Muslim fans, I was just promoting a fight.’ No, it’s not promoting a fight when you’re talking about religion,” Muhammad said on his YouTube channel. “He always plays that role of saying stupid stuff and then afterward, ‘I love this guy, this guy’s the best,’ blah blah. No. When you talk about religion, talk about family, that hits different.”

Muhammad, who competes at welterweight, doesn’t see a natural matchup with Strickland—who fights at middleweight—but that hasn’t stopped him from calling for a showdown. “I hope to one day step in the cage with that clown before it’s all said and done and just make him bleed,” Muhammad added.

In the world of combat sports, pre-fight trash talk is part of the game. But Muhammad draws a firm line when it comes to attacking someone’s faith. As the welterweight contender continues to climb the ranks, fans are left wondering: could a super fight between these two outspoken Americans actually happen? If it does, expect fireworks—and maybe a few more hard feelings.
