Behind the Guardians’ Franco Aleman Roster Decision

The Cleveland Guardians optioned promising pitcher Franco Aleman after just two outings.

There was plenty of buzz around Franco Aleman when the Cleveland Guardians called him up from Triple-A Columbus for his MLB debut earlier this week. The young right-hander had fans and analysts alike excited about his potential to become a mainstay in the Guardians' bullpen—and maybe even a high-leverage weapon down the road, thanks to his elite fastball and impressive strikeout rate.

But after just two outings, Cleveland made the tough call to option Aleman back to the minors, bringing up reliever Codi Heuer to take his spot on the roster. So, what happened?

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt explained that the decision came down to pure roster math and bullpen management. With the team coming off a grueling 13-game stretch, they needed a fresh arm who could provide multiple innings. Heuer—who has been dealing at Triple-A with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and a 21 percent strikeout rate—fit that bill perfectly.

“Just the position we're in right now, we needed some innings today, with where the bullpen is,” Vogt said. “Codi will be with us, which we're really excited about. He had a great spring and is off to a great start in Columbus.”

This move isn't a reflection of Aleman's performance. In his brief big-league debut, he tossed 2.2 innings across two appearances, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out one and walking one. Vogt was quick to praise the rookie: “Franco threw the ball excellent. Two great outings. We threw him in the eighth inning of a two-run game because we had that kind of confidence in him.”

For Guardians fans, this is a classic case of organizational depth at work. Aleman has the tools to be a key piece of the bullpen for years to come, and Vogt made it clear that this isn't goodbye—it's just "see you later." Expect to see the promising right-hander back in Cleveland before the season is over, ready to build on his impressive debut.
