Diego Pavia's name is now etched in Vanderbilt football history as one of the program's all-time greats, a quarterback who delivered a Heisman-finalist season and a record-breaking ten wins to Nashville. But his path to becoming a Commodore legend almost took a very different turn, one that involved the very team he famously dismantled.

Before linking up with Coach Clark Lea at Vanderbilt, and before his former New Mexico State coach Jerry Kill joined the staff, Pavia was a hot commodity in the transfer portal. In a revealing conversation on Jon Gruden's "QB Class" show ahead of the NFL Draft, Pavia shared a stunning anecdote from his breakout moment.

The setting was the aftermath of New Mexico State's stunning 31-10 upset of Auburn in 2023, a game where the Aggies were 25-point underdogs. Pavia, playing through a hamstring injury, was brilliant, throwing for 201 yards and three touchdowns. After the final whistle, the quarterback saw an opportunity.
