The Chicago Bears are clearly building for the future, and rookie center Logan Jones has been handed the keys to his own destiny. Selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, Jones enters a high-stakes battle for playing time—and head coach Ben Johnson has made it clear: the rookie's snap count is entirely up to him.
Jones is currently slotted as the backup to veteran Garrett Bradbury, a reliable free-agent signing who stepped in after Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman's retirement. Bradbury was a model of consistency last season, playing all 1,070 offensive snaps for the New England Patriots without missing a single playoff rep and drawing zero penalties. That's the standard Jones is chasing.
But Johnson isn't handing out starting jobs. "The ball's in his court," Johnson said after the first day of rookie minicamp. "We're looking to create competition and consistency day after day. It's about building trust with Caleb [Williams] and the other quarterbacks, within that offensive line room, and with the coaching staff."
Jones isn't your typical rookie. After arriving at Iowa in 2020 and redshirting, he missed the entire 2021 season due to injury. But when he finally got his shot, he started all 13 games at center, showing the kind of resilience and experience that college prospects rarely bring to the pro level.
The Bears' draft class—featuring Dillon Thieneman, Jones, Sam Roush, Zavion Thomas, Malik Muhammad, Keyshaun Elliott, and Jordan Van Den Berg—signals a clear shift toward youth. Several of these players are positioned to step into starting roles as the team moves on from expiring contracts like tight end Cole Kmet, linebacker T.J. Edwards, and Bradbury himself.
For Jones, the opportunity is real. Whether he seizes it depends on his ability to outwork a seasoned veteran and prove he can protect the franchise quarterback. As Johnson put it, time will tell—but the rookie controls the clock.
