The Chicago Bears have been heavily linked to Las Vegas Raiders star edge rusher Maxx Crosby for months, with many insiders even naming the Bears as the frontrunner if a trade were to materialize. But for fans dreaming of Crosby in a Bears uniform, reality is starting to set in.
That trade hasn't happened yet, and according to the latest reports, there are several reasons why. First and foremost, the failed trade with the Baltimore Ravens raised significant red flags across the league. When a respected organization like the Ravens backs out of a deal, it sends shockwaves through the market and inevitably cools interest from other teams.
According to Albert Breer, "There's a very, very high percentage chance that Maxx Crosby starts the regular season with the Raiders." The expectation is that Crosby will settle back into his role as a leader and torchbearer for Klint Kubiak's new program in Las Vegas. The Raiders appear committed to building around their defensive cornerstone rather than moving him.
Of course, in the NFL, never say never. Things can change in an instant. If the Raiders eventually decide to move on, the Bears would almost certainly be the first team to call. But general manager Ryan Poles will have to weigh whether the risk and price tag are worth it for a player of Crosby's caliber.
For now, Bears fans may need to look elsewhere for that game-changing pass rusher. The door on a Crosby trade isn't completely shut, but it's closing fast.
