In a thrilling mid-week showdown at Rec Park, the W.F. West Bearcats edged out the Shelton Highclimbers 4-3, capping off a perfect April with an 8-0 record. The victory not only solidified their lead atop the Evergreen Conference standings but also showcased the team's resilience in tight contests—five of their eight April wins came by three runs or fewer.

The Bearcats (14-2, 10-1 EvCo) found themselves trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Despite three errors and a disciplined plate approach from Shelton, W.F. West refused to back down. The rally began with a single and an error that put runners on the corners. Kenley Fragner then delivered a clutch RBI single to give the Bearcats their first lead of the night. Rayah Middleton crossed the plate on a defensive miscue, and ace Taylor Tobin capped the scoring with an RBI base hit of her own.

Tobin was the workhorse on the mound, tossing a complete seven innings despite not having her best stuff. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out 12 on 118 pitches. In the seventh, she left the tying run stranded in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first, sealing the win. "Didn't have her best stuff and the girl is a workhorse," said W.F. West head coach Kevin Zylstra. "Every night we play, she wants the ball. She is a competitor."

At the plate, Tobin helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 performance, including an RBI. She was joined by Fragner and Avery Osborn, who each collected two hits. Osborn scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to knot the game at 1-1. The Bearcats finished with nine hits and struck out just three times, a testament to their disciplined approach at the dish.

For Shelton, pitcher Gouley worked six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Schuffenhauer went 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks, while Fauula added a double and an RBI in a 2-for-4 effort. Rasmussen also chipped in with two hits and a run scored.

"These girls are extremely resilient," Zylstra added. "We've had bad first innings and they could easily hang our heads, but there is none of that. In the end, we were able to pull it out."

The Bearcats will look to carry that momentum on the road when they face Black Hills on Friday.
