Bayern Munich has locked down its legendary goalkeeper for another season. The German Bundesliga powerhouse announced Friday that veteran shot-stopper Manuel Neuer has signed a one-year contract extension, ensuring the 40-year-old icon remains between the posts through the 2026-27 campaign.
"I'm absolutely delighted," Neuer told FCBayern.com. "It took me a while to make up my mind. I just wanted to take my time with this, because it's a very important decision, first and foremost for me, but of course also for the club and for our team. Now, I'm convinced it's the right decision."
Neuer isn't the only goalkeeper staying put. Fellow Reds goalie Sven Ulreich also agreed to a one-year extension, keeping the experienced duo together for another season. "We've got a fantastic squad with a brilliant coaching team, and it's great fun every day, not least within our goalkeeping team," Ulreich said. "It's wonderful to see how everything keeps developing, and I'm sure we'll be in with a chance of achieving everything again next season."
Neuer's decision to stay puts an exclamation point on an already illustrious career with Bayern. Over 15 seasons, he's made 597 appearances for the club, including 41 this past campaign. His tenure has been nothing short of legendary: 13 Bundesliga titles—the most recent clinched this season—and two Champions League crowns. On the international stage, Neuer made 124 appearances for Germany before retiring from national duty, highlighted by a World Cup victory in 2014 when the Germans defeated a Lionel Messi-led Argentina.
Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund highlighted the depth in goal, praising the trio of Neuer, Ulreich, and emerging talent Jonas Urbig. "FC Bayern is in excellent shape for the future when it comes to goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich possess a level of experience others can only dream of—and Jonas Urbig benefits from this in their daily training sessions," Freund said. "All three are great characters who together form a unique team, the likes of which cannot be found at any other European club."
Fans can catch Neuer and the Reds in action this Saturday, May 17, when Bayern hosts Koln in a Bundesliga match at 9:30 a.m. EDT in Munich. The excitement continues on May 23, as they face FfB Stuttgart in the German Cup finale. For supporters looking to gear up like their favorite goalkeeper, now's the perfect time to grab some Bayern Munich merchandise and celebrate another season of elite-level play.
