Manuel Neuer has extended his contract with Bayern Munich for one year and is expected to remain the club's first-choice goalkeeper next season. "It is definitely the right decision," the 40-year-old said in a club statement on Friday.

In a move that solidifies their goalkeeping future, Bayern Munich's legendary shot-stopper Manuel Neuer has officially signed a one-year contract extension. The 40-year-old will remain at the Allianz Arena until June 2026, putting an end to speculation about his retirement and keeping the Bundesliga champions in safe hands for another season.

"It is definitely the right decision," Neuer said in a club statement on Friday. "We have got the right spirit in the team." His previous deal was set to expire this summer, and the veteran had been weighing up his options, including the possibility of hanging up his gloves.

This extension comes at a crucial time for Bayern, as Neuer will continue to mentor promising young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who has been sharing time between the posts this season. The club sees Urbig as the long-term successor, and Neuer's experience will be invaluable in his development. Adding to the stability between the sticks, third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich has also extended his contract for another year.

The timing couldn't be better for Neuer, who will captain the side in their final Bundesliga match of the season against Cologne on Saturday. After the game, he'll have the honor of lifting the championship trophy in front of the home fans. Coach Vincent Kompany had high praise for his goalkeeper before the extension was announced: "Bayern are German champions and we have the best German goalkeeper. That says it all. Manu will play tomorrow."

Looking ahead, Bayern have a German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart on May 23, and Neuer will be crucial to their chances of completing a domestic double. The goalkeeper's legendary status at the club was summed up by CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen: "People will still be talking about this goalkeeper, this captain and this personality for many years to come. This goalkeeping duo is one for the history books."

Entering what is likely his 16th and final season with Bayern, Neuer joined from Schalke in 2011 for a reported €30 million ($34.9 million). Since then, he has become one of the most decorated players in the club's history, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and Champions League crowns. The former Germany captain, who lifted the 2014 World Cup, has retired from international duty, but rumors persist that coach Julian Nagelsmann might call him back for the upcoming World Cup, with squad announcements expected soon.
