Bayern Munich are keeping their eyes firmly on the prize as they prepare for a blockbuster German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart next weekend. While Saturday's final Bundesliga match of the season against Cologne may feel like a celebration, the Bavarian giants are refusing to let their focus slip.
The men's team is determined to match their female counterparts and complete a domestic double, especially after their Champions League dreams were dashed in the semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain. Saturday's home clash with Cologne will feature the presentation of the coveted Bundesliga trophy—the Meisterschale—along with emotional send-offs for departing players like Leon Goretzka. But head coach Vincent Kompany wants more than just a party atmosphere; he's demanding a professional performance to build momentum heading into the cup showdown.
"You have to win every game—that's the Bayern mentality," Kompany stated firmly during Friday's press conference. "You always have to be mentally prepared for every match. That's part and parcel of being a footballer." He added, "I'm holding off on a final season assessment for now. We still have the crucial cup final, which is of great importance to us."
The numbers speak for themselves: Bayern have already smashed the Bundesliga scoring record with an incredible 117 goals this season, and there's no sign of them taking their foot off the gas. Kompany confirmed that Goretzka will start against Cologne, but made it clear it's no mere farewell gesture. "Of course Leon Goretzka will start—that's not a favour. He's earned it through years of hard work with this club. It's a nice gesture for the squad."
Manuel Neuer will also be between the posts, with an announcement on a one-year contract extension expected soon. With the Cup final against holders Stuttgart looming, Bayern are determined to end the season with silverware and style.
