In a match defined by a lightning-fast start and a resilient defensive stand, Bay FC escaped Snapdragon Stadium with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over San Diego Wave FC on Sunday night.

Racheal Kundananji struck early, finding the back of the net in just the 5th minute to give Bay FC the lead. From there, the visitors dug in, holding off a persistent San Diego attack to claim a crucial three points on the road.

The result snaps a two-game losing skid for Bay FC, who had been blanked in consecutive matches against Washington and Gotham. For San Diego, the loss marks their second straight defeat after a five-game winning streak had propelled them into the NWSL's top three.

"I think we created enough chances to win the game," Wave assistant coach Becki Tweed said after the match. "On another day, it's a different result. But we've definitely got to go away and reflect, and look at what we can improve and grow upon."

The Wave's attack, which had been firing on all cylinders during their recent run—posting wins over Utah (2-1), Portland (3-1), Chicago (3-0), Boston (1-0), and Denver (3-2)—has suddenly gone cold. Despite generating plenty of opportunities, San Diego has struggled to find that finishing touch in their last two outings.

That win streak came to an end Wednesday night in Portland, where the Thorns handed the Wave a 2-0 defeat in a top-of-the-table clash. Marie Müller opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and star forward Sophia Wilson sealed the result in the 64th minute.

Sunday's match also marked the return of goalkeeper DiDi Haracic, who started for the first time since the season opener on March 15 after recovering from injury. Leah Freeman had started in her absence but was unavailable for this contest.

On the Bay FC side, head coach Eidevall made a notable lineup change, inserting Gabi Portilho over Kimmi Ascanio. Portilho, who came on as a substitute against Portland and registered five shot attempts, brought an energetic spark to the attack.

Bay FC entered the match near the bottom of the table with a 2-3 record, having gone winless through April. Their most recent outing was a 3-0 loss to Gotham, where goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz set a club record with 12 saves—tying an NWSL single-game high. Adding to their challenges, 18-year-old forward Alex Pfeiffer, the team's leading scorer with two goals, was sidelined with a knee injury.

Before kickoff, U.S. Women's National Team head coach Emma Hayes was in attendance, a reminder of the growing spotlight on this league and the talent on display every week.
