TCU baseball is heating up at just the right time. After a tough series loss to Oklahoma State last weekend, the Horned Frogs brought out the brooms at Lupton Stadium, sweeping Utah in a three-game Big 12 showdown and hitting the 30-win mark for the season. Now sitting at 32-18 overall and 16-11 in conference play, TCU has climbed to sixth in the standings with momentum on their side. Next up: a regular-season finale against West Virginia, a Mountaineers squad currently holding down second place in the Big 12, before the conference tournament kicks off.
The series opener on Friday was all about Colton Griffin, whose two-run single in the fifth inning gave TCU the edge. But the story of the day was Tommy LaPour, making his first start since returning from an early-season injury. The right-hander fired three innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit to earn the win and improve to 1-1. From there, the bullpen took over in dominant fashion. Trever Baumler and Mason Brassfield combined for five scoreless innings of relief—Baumler striking out two over three frames, Brassfield perfect through two with two punchouts. Tanner Sagouspe slammed the door in the ninth, striking out the side to pick up his fourth save of the season. Offensively, Griffin led the way with a 2-for-4 day, while Preston Gamster doubled and Sawyer Strosnider tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Saturday brought more fireworks. Strosnider launched a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, sparking a rally that saw TCU plate runs in the fifth and sixth for the win. Cole Cramer and Rob Liddington delivered RBI singles, with Liddington going 2-for-4 and Nolan Traeger adding a 2-for-3 performance. Jack Bell chipped in with a double. On the mound, Lance Davis turned in perhaps his best outing of the season, working around a lead-off single to keep Utah off balance and secure another series victory for the Frogs.
With the regular season winding down and the Big 12 tournament on the horizon, TCU is building serious momentum—and looking like a team no one wants to face in October.
