The Texas high school baseball playoffs are heating up, and the ace pitchers are stealing the show. On Thursday night in Coppell, Keller's Cole Koeninger delivered a performance for the ages, leading his team to a commanding 6-0 victory over Mansfield Lake Ridge and securing a two-game sweep in the best-of-3 Class 6A Division I bi-district series.
Koeninger was nearly untouchable, retiring the first 18 batters he faced in order. The right-hander got stronger as the game progressed, striking out the final nine hitters he saw and finishing with an eye-popping 14 strikeouts. He also helped his own cause at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring twice.
"It wasn't my call, I would have loved to come back out, but we wanted to get some work for another guy," said Koeninger, who is headed to play college baseball at Tennessee unless his name is called early in the MLB draft. Reliever Connor Davenport came on for the seventh inning.
Keller head coach Rob Stramp, in his 28th season, had nothing but praise for his star. "Cole is as talented a player as I've had here," Stramp said. "He's got a great chance to be big time. He's outstanding at shortstop and has only been pitching a short while." When asked about his future, Koeninger smiled: "I love to hit, so maybe I could do both."
The Indians (32-2-2) are ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 1 in Texas by MaxPreps, and they are riding a wave of momentum into the next round. This marks the 24th consecutive playoff appearance for the program, which now advances to face either El Paso Pebble Hills or Odessa Permian.
For Mansfield Lake Ridge (15-11-2), it was a tough end to an otherwise strong season. The Jaguars were held scoreless for the entire series, though Luke Pelletier broke up the perfect game in the seventh with a two-out double to left. The loss snapped a streak of five straight first-round playoff victories.
Keller struck early, with Koeninger singling to lead off the game and Brock Burkett drawing a walk. Both runners eventually scored on wild pitches for a 2-0 lead. The Indians blew the game open in the third inning with a four-run outburst, keyed by a sacrifice fly from Logan Brown and a hit from Jayden Moe.
While Keller is celebrating a sweep, other marquee series are headed to decisive Game 3 showdowns, including Southlake Carroll vs. Boswell and Flower Mound vs. Allen. Stay tuned—the best of Texas high school baseball is just getting started.
