ROYAL CENTER — After nearly knocking off Class 1A No. 2 Triton earlier this season, the Pioneer baseball team closed the deal against No. 3 Caston on Tuesday with an 11-7 victory. The win was just the Panthers’ (4-13, 4-7 HNAC) fourth this season season while at the same time they knocked the Comets (15-4, 12-2) out of contention for the HNAC championship. The Pioneer baseball team proved they can compete with the best, delivering a statement 11-7 victory over Class 1A No. 3 Caston on Tuesday. After a close call against No. 2 Triton earlier this season, the Panthers finally sealed the deal against a top-tier opponent, shaking up the Hoosier North Athletic Conference (HNAC) standings in the process.

With the win, Pioneer improved to 4-13 overall and 4-7 in conference play, while handing Caston (15-4, 12-2) a costly loss that knocked the Comets out of HNAC championship contention. Triton (17-2, 15-1) has now secured the league title outright. For the Panthers, it was also sweet redemption after a lopsided 24-6 defeat to Caston just one day earlier in Fulton.

"I'm just excited for the team," said Pioneer coach Josh Hardy. "Coming out of yesterday's game, knowing going into today that it doesn't matter what happened yesterday—we got a new day. I was happy with the way we were aggressive at the plate for most of the game. Our two guys on the mound did a great job, and our defense held them down too."

Junior right-handers Lane Weldy and Carter Carmichael combined to lead the Panthers on the mound. Weldy worked four innings, allowing seven runs (none earned) on six hits and three walks. Carmichael closed the door with three scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just two hits and three walks. It was a complete turnaround for the pitching staff, which had seen Caston score 31 runs in the first eight frames of the two-game series before Carmichael posted three straight zeros.

"It feels great," Weldy said. "Since I was a freshman, we haven't beaten them yet. We played pretty close with Triton, so it felt like we deserved this one for sure."

Carmichael echoed the sentiment, praising the team's all-around effort. "Our defense played good, pitching was good, our catcher (Hunter Stover) was good—dropping in, blocking. Our bats were good too. I'd say we were well-rounded."

At the plate, Weldy led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Gabe Scott contributed a single and four RBIs, while Cylis Kistler added a single and two RBIs. Archie Blickenstaff chipped in with a single and an RBI, and Braxton Maciejewski added a single and a run scored.

The turning point came in the fourth inning, when the Panthers erupted for 11 runs against Caston junior ace Carson Harness. Harness had cruised through the first three frames, allowing just one walk and striking out five. But in the fourth, he ran into trouble, issuing four walks and giving up five hits, while three errors forced him to get six outs instead of three. He still managed to strike out the side, but the damage was done.

"He hit a little bit of a wall and missed the strike zone a little bit," said Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf. "It was a little tighter zone, but I think it was the same both ways. It wasn't lopsided. A couple walks, a couple hits, and it got away from us."

For the Panthers, this win is a huge confidence booster as they prepare for the Tri-County Sectional, which begins May 27. They'll face West Central (10-4) in the opening round at 6 p.m. After showing they can hang with the best in Class 1A, Pioneer is ready to make some noise in the postseason.
