Two home runs in the first two innings put down the Red Birds.

Northwestern's bats came alive early and never looked back, powering the Wildcats to a commanding 7-1 victory over Illinois State at Rocky and Bernice Miller Park on Tuesday.

Riding the momentum from a weekend series win over Indiana, the Wildcats (20-25-1, 7-17 B1G) jumped all over the Redbirds (30-18, 12-9 MVC) right from the first pitch. With 23 runs scored over their last three games, Northwestern's lineup is heating up at just the right time—a promising sign for a team looking to build late-season momentum.

Starter Sam Hliboki set the tone on the mound, keeping the Redbirds off balance early and letting the offense do the heavy lifting. After Owen McElfatrick drew a leadoff walk, Jack Lausch launched a towering two-run homer to center field—his third consecutive game with a home run. The crowd erupted as Lausch rounded the bases, and the Wildcats had a 2-0 lead before most fans had settled into their seats.

The second inning was more of the same. A hit-by-pitch set the table for Charlie Caruso, who ripped an RBI double to make it 3-0. Then McElfatrick got in on the long-ball action, sneaking a two-run shot around the left field foul pole to push the lead to 5-0. Illinois State immediately went to the bullpen, but the damage was already done.

The Redbirds answered quickly in the top of the third when Gra Mastros launched a solo home run, but that was all they could muster against Hliboki. The NU starter went five strong innings, allowing just that one run on four hits while striking out four.

After Jake Rifenburg took over in the sixth and kept Illinois State at bay, the Wildcats added insurance in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff single and a walk put two runners on, and the Redbirds' bullpen couldn't contain the pressure. Nick Barron scored on a wild pitch, and Jake Yang crossed home on a stolen base attempt—two runs coming across on just one hit.

The win marks Northwestern's third straight strong offensive performance, and with the bats swinging this confidently, the Wildcats look poised to make some noise down the stretch. For fans tracking the team's progress, this is exactly the kind of explosive start that can define a season.
